US President Donald Trump alleged on Sunday that several nuclear-armed nations, including Russia and China, have been carrying out secret underground nuclear tests hidden from public knowledge.
In an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Trump defended his surprise order last Thursday for the United States to resume nuclear weapons testing, saying other powers were already doing so covertly.
“Russia’s testing, and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it,” Trump said. “You don’t necessarily know where they’re testing... They test way underground where people don’t know exactly what’s happening with the test,” he added.
Neither Russia nor China has publicly confirmed any such activity, and both countries remain signatories to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which bans all nuclear explosions, though the treaty has not yet formally entered into force.
