New political front emerges to challenge BNP-Jamaat

A broad new political coalition outside the BNP-Jamaat fold is on the verge of formal emergence, with an official announcement expected within a day or two. According to sources close to the negotiations, the unveiling is likely to take place at the Abu Sayeed Convention Hall in Dhaka, marking a significant realignment in the post-July mass uprising political landscape.

The coalition is being shaped around four core actors-the National Citizen Party (NCP), Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, United People (UP) Bangladesh, and Rashtra Sanskar Andolan. Negotiations are also underway to bring in the Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) and several groups from the Democratic Platform.

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari confirmed the imminent announcement, stating, "The countrymen will see a new alliance outside the BNP-Jamaat." 

He framed the initiative as an outcome of the July uprising, insisting that the component parties are united in their commitment to "implement the aspirations of the July mass uprising." 

Nasiruddin added that the alliance intends to work "for reforms, for women, for Islamic scholars and against corruption, terrorism, and extortion," stressing that it is designed as an anti-fascist front that "will field candidates for 300 seats."

AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju reinforced the reformist and election-focused outlook of the emerging bloc. 

"We have a plan to hold elections together," he said, clarifying that electoral arithmetic will not outweigh principles. 

"Seats will not be the priority; we will prioritise the implementation of promises. If there is a potential candidate among the old parties, then it is good. We may think that he played a role in our July coup and we can support someone like that."

He further added that "whoever votes with whose symbol, the rest will support it," leaving open the possibility that "before the election, everyone can unite and vote with one symbol." Decisions, he said, will be taken "according to electoral law" and grounded in "the policies and ideas of different parties."

NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar acknowledged ideological differences within the coalition but insisted these will not prevent unified action. "We know the tendencies and ideologies of each party. We will go together after overcoming these differences," he said.

Despite intentions to field candidates in all 300 constituencies, questions remain regarding electoral symbols, as not all coalition members are registered with the Election Commission. On this issue, AB Party Convener Ali Ahsan Junaid said, "There has been no detailed discussion on this yet. We will take a decision as a party. We are holding the discussion in our party forum. For now, the idea is to create a separate space."

Leaders involved in the negotiations emphasised that beyond electoral coordination, the alliance aims to operate as a political pressure bloc capable of resisting any resurgence of fascism and compelling future governments to adhere to democratic and reform-oriented governance.
