LDP suspends Sarwardy over discipline breach

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has temporarily suspended its Presidium Member, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, for violating party discipline following a controversial social media post targeting the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The decision was confirmed by LDP Secretary General Dr Redwan Ahmed in a press release issued on Saturday (December 20).

According to the press release, the party took note of a "highly misleading" Facebook post made by Sarwardy that, the LDP said, does not reflect the party's official position, decisions, or views.

Dr Redwan Ahmed said the post falsely claimed that the LDP has neither an alliance nor any written agreement with the BNP, asserting instead that the relationship was based solely on "trust and discussions." In the same post, Sarwardy alleged that the BNP had broken that trust and used offensive language, describing the party as hypocritical and corrupt.

The press release further stated that Sarwardy went on to declare that all relations with the BNP were over, claiming that discussions with the party were a "waste of time." He also alleged that the BNP had turned into a "corrupt mafia syndicate" and asserted that no honest behaviour could be expected from it.

In addition, Sarwardy reportedly advised "dignified people" to stay away from the BNP, accused the party of insulting armed forces officers, and claimed that the BNP's political downfall was inevitable.

The LDP leadership said such remarks were "extremely unfortunate," misleading, and a clear violation of party discipline. The matter was immediately brought to the attention of LDP President Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed and other senior party leaders.
