The Commonwealth has described Bangladesh’s latest national election as a landmark democratic event, calling it one of the largest and most significant electoral exercises worldwide in 2026.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the international organization said Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election set a unique example with the participation of more than 12 crore 70 lakh registered voters and 2,026 candidates, including 78 women.

The scale, inclusiveness, and organization of the vote were highlighted as key achievements in the country’s democratic journey.

The statement noted that the chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group and former President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, visited the Vikarunnisa Noon School and College polling center in the Dhaka-8 constituency to observe voting procedures.

He said the observer team monitored the entire process, from the opening of polling stations to the announcement of results, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of the election.

Akufo-Addo praised the inclusion of a large number of expatriate voters and the simultaneous holding of a referendum on constitutional reforms, describing both as significant steps. He said these initiatives reflected Bangladesh’s strong commitment to strengthening democratic governance and public participation.

Commonwealth observers reported that a sense of calm anticipation prevailed across the country even before polling officially began at 7:30 am.

Teams stationed at key centers nationwide closely monitored voter turnout and the overall environment. As the morning progressed, the early anticipation transformed into steady voter participation, which the observers described as a crucial moment in the country’s democratic process.

The statement also quoted a first-time voter, 19-year-old Yudhisthir Bishwas from Habiganj-3, a student at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, who said the moment was deeply meaningful for him as it marked his first opportunity to have a formal say in a national decision.

A 14-member Commonwealth observer team had been deployed across Bangladesh’s eight divisions two days before the vote to monitor preparations and polling day activities.
