Nasiruddin for defiance against 'entrenched electoral malpractice'

National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari on Wednesday night declared defiance against what he described as entrenched electoral malpractice and a coercive political culture, saying, "If they kill us, let them kill us. We will continue to speak out against injustice. We will not remain silent."

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Central Jam-e-Masjid of Dhaka University after Tarawih prayers.

Referring to his candidacy from Dhaka-8 in the recent parliamentary election, Patwari alleged systemic inducement and undue influence during the campaign.

"During the election, many criminals approached me and said, 'Make a deal with us.' Some businesspeople suggested arrangements with others. Even administrative officials told me, 'Keep quiet, we will ensure your victory.' But I did not compromise with anyone," he claimed.

Patwari contested the election as a candidate of a Jamaat-led alliance and was defeated by Mirza Abbas of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. However, he drew attention during the campaign for his sharply worded criticism of rival candidates.

Calling for civic resistance against criminal patronage networks, he said citizens should stand united against corruption and extortion. He also urged those involved in terrorism, corruption and extortion to reflect and reform during the holy month of Ramadan.

Addressing concerns about electoral integrity in his constituency, he warned against vote rigging and irregularities in future polls, saying that any attempt to manipulate votes would be strongly resisted.
