Youth are key to future development: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the youth are the main driving force behind Bangladesh's development and progress, stressing that the country's future depends on the younger generation.

He made the remarks on Saturday after paying tribute at the graves of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in the capital. He was accompanied by leaders of the newly formed full central committee of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal.

Fakhrul said BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has approved the full committee of Jubo Dal and expressed hope that the new leadership would strengthen the organisation nationwide. He added that bringing young people into leadership roles remains a key policy priority, as the country's development and prosperity depend on youth participation.

He also said the government is working to implement the vision of "Bangladesh First, Bangladesh Above All," with Jubo Dal expected to play an important role in achieving that goal. He further said, "Under the leadership of New Bangladesh's dynamic leader Tarique Rahman, the new leadership of Jubo Dal will work for the country's development and the welfare of its people."

Following the tribute, a special prayer was offered for the eternal peace of Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia. Among those present were Jubo Dal Central President Abdul Monayem Munna, General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan and other leaders.

Meanwhile, at a separate discussion at the Institution of Agriculturists, Bangladesh (IAB) in the capital, Fakhrul said the government plans to introduce a national award for the country's top agricultural scientists.

He alleged that bureaucratic complexities over the past 17 years had limited initiatives for the welfare and professional development of agricultural officers. He said earlier governments had ensured proper recognition for agricultural professionals and added that the current leadership would continue similar support.

Describing agriculture as a key sector of the economy, Fakhrul said farming is becoming less profitable in many cases, and therefore increased incentives are needed to encourage farmers and boost production.

He also said Tarique Rahman has initiated welfare programmes such as the Family Card and Farmer Card to strengthen social safety nets and support the agricultural sector.

At the event, Social Welfare Minister Dr AZM Zahid Hossain announced that distribution of Family Cards to 4.02 million families will begin on July 1, along with a nationwide Farmer Card distribution programme.

He said these initiatives would help improve living standards for low- and middle-income families while ensuring institutional support for farmers.
