Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has decided to avoid lavish iftar programmes this year, opting to host only two modest events at State Guest House Jamuna in view of the country’s overall situation.

Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman confirmed on Thursday that the two iftar programmes will be held in the capital city: one on March 6 to honour diplomats and another on March 7 for orphans, Islamic scholars and religious leaders.

Ruman explained that previously scheduled events for politicians on March 8 and journalists on March 10 at the same venue have been cancelled due to the prevailing circumstances.

Traditionally, the Prime Minister hosts multiple state iftar programmes every year for people from different professions and social segments.

However, since assuming office, Tarique Rahman has preferred to observe iftar privately with his family at his residence and no grand state-level events are being arranged this year.

The decision reflects the government’s effort to align public events with the current national situation and maintain a low-key approach to Ramadan gatherings.
