Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a charge sheet against former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and his wife Lutfun Tahmina in a case over acquisition of unexplained wealth and money laundering.
The outgoing Chairman of ACC Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen granted the approval, which was confirmed by ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain.
According to the investigation, Lutfun Tahmina owns immovable and movable assets worth Tk 18.44 crore. In addition, family expenditures were recorded at Tk 1.66 crore, bringing her total declared assets to Tk 20.09 crore.
However, her legally declared income accounted for only Tk 5.22 crore, leaving Tk 14.87 crore as unexplained wealth with no verifiable sources.
The ACC stated that this constitutes a punishable offense under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004.
The commission further found that her husband, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, allegedly used his official position to facilitate the accumulation of these assets through bribery and corruption.
Accordingly, he has been charged under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, and Section 109 of the Penal Code.
Investigators also noted that a bank account held by a company owned by Lutfun Tahmina received Tk 6.66 crore from suspicious sources.
According to ACC, the money may have been obtained as bribes or illicit payments, and attempts were made to conceal the source through transfers, conversions, and layering processes.
The investigation revealed that the couple’s total illicit wealth of Tk 21.53 crore includes properties such as houses, flats, commercial spaces, vehicles, bank balances, fixed deposits, savings certificates and passenger transport buses.
The ACC stated that the transactions and layering of these funds indicate violations under Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Among Lutfun Tahmina’s immovable assets are flats, land and shops, while movable assets include business shares, bank balances, fixed deposits, savings certificates and vehicles used for passenger transport.
