The newly appointed administrators of Barishal, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Cumilla city corporations met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday.

The meeting took place at Prime Minister’s Office in Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around noon, according to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon. State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Shahe Alam was also present.

The government recently appointed Advocate Bilkis Akter Jahan Shirin as administrator of Barishal City Corporation, Md Mahfuzur Rahman of Rajshahi City Corporation, Md Rukunuzzaman Rokon of Mymensingh City Corporation, Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury of Rangpur City Corporation, and Md Yusuf Molla of Cumilla City Corporation.

A gazette notification was issued confirming their appointments and all five are leaders of BNP. They are scheduled to assume office on Sunday.

Officials from the Local Government Ministry said the political administrators will perform their duties until city corporation elections are held, after which they will hand over responsibilities to the elected mayors.

Earlier, on February 23, administrators were appointed to six other city corporations, including Dhaka North and Dhaka South.

With the latest appointments, administrators have now been assigned to 11 city corporations across the country.

At Chattogram City Corporation, BNP leader Shahadat Hossain is currently performing mayoral duties under a court order.
