Bangladesh seeks Russia’s support for UNGA presidency bid

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday highlighted the longstanding and friendly ties between Bangladesh and Russia, noting that cooperation between the two countries continues to expand across several sectors.

She said bilateral collaboration has been growing in areas such as energy, trade and investment, science and technology, education, skilled migration and people-to-people exchanges.

During the meeting, the State Minister sought Russia’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly for the 2026–2027 term.

The matter came up when Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin, Ambassador of Russian Federation to Bangladesh, paid a courtesy call on the State Minister at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Russian envoy reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation and praised Bangladesh’s continued engagement with Russia.

He also congratulated Shama Obaed Islam on assuming office and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to deepen.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the steady progress in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further advancing the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership between Bangladesh and Russia.
