DESCO launches campaign to limit excessive lighting in malls,commercial areas

 
Following a directive from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources last Sunday to reduce fuel and electricity use, Dhaka Electricity Supply PLC (DESCO) began a special campaign on Monday to limit excessive lighting in malls, markets, and residential and commercial buildings in areas of Dhaka under its coverage.

The drive was conducted on Thursday at 7:00 pm in several areas of Uttara, including Zamzam Tower, Rajlakshmi, RFL, Best Buy, Apex, Gausul Azam Avenue, Sonargaon Janapath, Shah Mokhdum Avenue, Sector-12 Khalpar, Sector-13, and Goribe Newaz Avenue.
The operation was led by Special Metropolitan Magistrate (Joint District Judge) of Dhaka Electricity Supply PLC (DESCO), Md Hadiuzzaman, says a press release. 

During the drive, excessive lighting was immediately identified and switched off. Authorities also warned that strict punishment and fines would be imposed if excessive lighting continues to be used until further instructions are issued.

During the drive, market and shop owners were specially requested to avoid unnecessary electricity use inside their shops and to keep the temperature of air conditioners above 25°C. Customers visiting the shopping areas, pedestrians, and shop staff were also given awareness leaflets outlining government directives and energy-saving guidelines.

Officials and staff members of the Uttara West Sales and Distribution Division of Dhaka Electricity Supply PLC (DESCO), including Sub-Divisional Engineer Md. Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan, were present during the drive, along with police personnel and members of the media. 

In addition, on March 11, drives were conducted in Gulshan 1, Gulshan 2, Gulshan Avenue, and Bir Uttam A. K. Khandaker Road, as well as at several shopping centers including Pink City Shopping Mall etc.
