Bengali film and television actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee has died in an accident at Talsari on Sunday. He was 42.

While initial reports suggest he may have drowned, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, reports Telegram India.

Banerjee’s sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the entertainment industry and beyond. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and sorrow, describing him as a “distinguished, young and popular actor” and extending condolences to his family and admirers.

Colleagues and acquaintances also paid tribute to the actor, remembering him as a multifaceted personality with a deep interest in literature and filmmaking. A Mumbai-based creative producer who worked with him noted that Banerjee had long aspired to direct a film, an ambition now left unfulfilled.

Beyond acting, Banerjee was active in literary circles and hosted the podcast Shohoj Kotha, which had a growing audience. He also authored more than ten books.

He rose to prominence with the 2008 hit Chirodini Tumi Je Amar alongside Priyanka Sarkar and went on to feature in notable films such as Meghe Dhaka Tara (2012), Zulfiqar (2016) and Rappa Roy & Full Stop Dot Com (2025). He was also seen in recent projects including the web series Thakumar Jhuli and Puropuri Eken.

His untimely death marks a significant loss to the Bengali entertainment industry.
