Rail communication in Mymensingh was disrupted twice within a span of a few hours on Monday following separate incidents involving passenger trains.

In the latest incident, train services on the Mymensingh-Chattogram route were suspended after a fire broke out in the engine of the Bijoy Express near Aitbaria Station at Ishwarganj upazila.

The incident occurred around 5:45PM when the train, route to Chattogram, reached near the station area. Railway sources said smoke suddenly started coming from the locomotive, followed by flames, forcing the train to come to a halt mid-journey.

The engine was rendered inoperative due to the fire, prompting a temporary suspension of train movement on the route.

Mymensingh Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Akhtar Hossain confirmed the incident, saying the train was immediately stopped after smoke and fire were detected.

He said a relief engine was dispatched to the scene and efforts were underway to remove the stranded train and restore normal operations. Train services on the Mymensingh-Chattogram route are expected to resume once the affected train is cleared, he added.

Earlier the same day, another disruption occurred on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route when the coupling hook of the Jamalpur Express engine snapped near Shahidnagar West Golabari Bazar area in Gafargaon upazila around 12:30PM.

The train was later repaired after nearly two hours of disruption and resumed its journey towards Mymensingh at around 2:30PM, restoring normal service on the route.

The two separate incidents within hours caused significant disruption to rail services in the region, although railway authorities said restoration efforts were carried out promptly.
