The Jatiya Sangsad on Monday passed a supplementary budget of Tk 56,117.59 crore for the current fiscal year 2025-26, authorising additional government expenditure from the consolidated fund.

The supplementary budget was passed through a voice vote after Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the supplementary appropriation bill in Parliament during the second session of the 13th Parliament’s seventh working day.

According to official data, the total original budget for 62 ministries and divisions in FY2025-26 stood at Tk 7.90 lakh crore, which was later revised to Tk 7.88 lakh crore.

Under the supplementary allocation, 27 ministries and institutions received an increased allocation amounting to Tk 56,117.59 crore, while budgets for 35 ministries and divisions were reduced by Tk 59,348.67 crore.

Before the passage of the bill, 25 grant demands were moved by respective ministers and state ministers and approved individually. Opposition lawmakers submitted 304 cut motions, but all were rejected through voice vote after limited discussion.

The highest allocation in the supplementary budget went to the Finance Division, followed by the Planning Division and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Significant allocations were also made for the Water Resources Division, Local Government Division, Election Commission and several other ministries.

Lawmakers from opposition parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP and independent members, participated in the discussions on selected cut motions before the final approval of the bill.
