No alternative to referendum verdict implementation: Golam Parwar

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has said there is “no alternative” to implementing the verdict delivered through a referendum, accusing the government of delaying its execution.

He made the remarks at a press conference of an 11-party alliance held on Thursday at Al-Falah Auditorium.

Parwar alleged that the government had taken a “U-turn” from its earlier position and was now offering various excuses instead of implementing the referendum outcome. 

He also claimed that opposition voices were being suppressed in parliament and criticised the government over several recent policy statements.

Referring to the energy sector, he questioned the Energy Minister’s claim that there was no crisis, saying the country was facing fuel shortages, long queues at petrol stations and difficulties even for lawmakers in accessing fuel. 

He added that the situation was also affecting fertilizer supply, warning of potential impacts on the upcoming Boro agricultural season.

On the health sector, Parwar expressed concern over what he described as a worsening measles situation, claiming that hospitals were under pressure and that many patients were in critical condition.

He further alleged a deterioration in law and order, citing incidents of extortion, murder and land grabbing and claimed that instability in the banking sector had been caused by large-scale loan defaults.

The Jamaat leader also accused the government of politicising public administration through transfers and forced resignations, arguing that there had been no meaningful improvement in governance.
