Myanmar’s military junta has reduced the prison sentence of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi by four and a half years, lowering her total term from 27 years to around 22 and a half years, according to a Reuters report.

Suu Kyi, a key figure in Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement, has been in detention since the military coup in February 2021 that ousted her elected government. Since then, she has faced multiple charges, including sedition, corruption, incitement against the military and violations of electoral and state secrecy laws.

She has consistently denied all allegations brought against her.

The sentence reduction comes amid growing international concern over her health and detention conditions. Last year, her son Kim Aris expressed serious concern about her deteriorating health and lack of access to information regarding her condition, even raising fears about her survival.

The United Nations has also voiced deep concern over Suu Kyi’s well-being, calling for transparency and improved conditions during her imprisonment.
