Low pressure over Bay triggers local cautionary signal no. 3

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has prompted authorities to issue Local Warning Signal no. 3 for four major seaports in the country, as unsettled weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Tuesday advised the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra Port to hoist the signal. 

According to its bulletin, an extension of the existing low-pressure area stretches from West Bengal to the northern Bay of Bengal.

In its 120-hour forecast from Tuesday 9 AM, the department said rainfall activity across the country may gradually decrease, while temperatures could rise.

However, intermittent rain and thunderstorms remain likely in the short term. 

Many areas in Dhaka Division, Mymensingh Division, Khulna Division, Barishal Division, Chattogram Division and Sylhet Division may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds and lightning. 

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of these regions.

Weather conditions are expected to follow a similar pattern over the next few days, with scattered rain and thunderstorms continuing across most divisions through Saturday. 

At times, heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.

Daytime temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged initially, with slight fluctuations in the following days, while nighttime temperatures may see minor variations.

Meteorologists warn that while rainfall may ease later in the forecast period, the current low-pressure system could still influence weather patterns, particularly in coastal and northern regions.
