NARAIL, May 6: A woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband in Narail Sadar upazila over a family dispute, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 12:30am on Tuesday in Bahirgram area of the upazila.

The deceased was Khadija Akhter Chandni, 20, daughter of Kalam Sheikh of Alka Village under Phultala Upazila in Khulna. Her husband, Shakib Sheikh, 25, has been arrested in connection with the killing.

Police and family sources said Chandni had come to visit her aunt's house in Bahirgram on Monday (May 4) along with her husband. The couple, married for about five years, have a three-and-a-half-year-old son named Tufan.

Relatives said frequent quarrels had been taking place between the couple due to Shakib's alleged drug addiction and unemployment.

At around 12:30am, Shakib allegedly attacked his wife while she was sleeping and hacked her with a wooden baton, leaving her critically injured.

Locals rushed her to Narail District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Officer-in-Charge of Narail Sadar Police Station Ajay Kumar Kundu said the accused initially tried to mislead investigators by claiming the death was accidental.

"He said the victim died after being struck accidentally by a baton. However, inconsistencies in his statement and evidence from the scene led to his confession," the OC said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kamruzzaman said police were alerted soon after the incident and reached both the hospital and crime scene.

"The weapon used in the killing and other evidence have been recovered. The husband has been arrested for his alleged involvement," he said.

Police said legal proceedings are underway and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
