The government has vowed to take strict action against irregularities in the country's water transport sector as National Water Safety Week-2026 began in Dhaka on Sunday, with senior officials acknowledging persistent problems such as mismanagement and weak coordination ahead of Eid travel and the monsoon season.

The weeklong programme, organised by the Department of Shipping under the theme "Safe Waterways, Protection of Lives and Property," was inaugurated at Dhaka Ladies Club in Ramna. The initiative aims to strengthen safety measures on inland waterways through stricter monitoring and improved management.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shipping and Road Transport Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam said complaints of mismanagement, poor coordination and systemic weaknesses continue to affect the water transport sector.

With Eid travel and the monsoon season approaching, he urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and ensure strict compliance with safety regulations. He stressed the need to prevent overcrowding on vessels and ensure that all boats are equipped with proper safety gear.

"The government will continue its efforts to improve monitoring, vessel registration and public awareness to make water travel safer," he said.

State Minister for Shipping and Bridges Rajib Ahsan warned that there would be zero tolerance for irregularities during Eid travel and the rainy season. He said legal action would be taken against anyone violating safety rules and called on vessel owners, workers and passengers to act responsibly.

Shipping Secretary Zakaria said the government is working to modernise the sector through digital systems and enhanced monitoring, including stronger field-level supervision and expanded online services.

Director General of the Department of Shipping Commodore Md Shafiul Bari said a recent survey identified many unregistered vessels, which are now being brought under registration. He added that digital number plates, online services, mandatory life jackets and a vessel tracking system (LTMS) are being introduced to improve safety and transparency.

The programme also featured a safety awareness video screening and a cultural event.
