Govt appoints new VCs to 11 public univs

The government has appointed new vice chancellors (VCs) to 11 public universities in a single day, replacing incumbent heads in 10 institutions while filling a long-vacant post at Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST).

The appointments were confirmed on Thursday (May 14) through separate notifications issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education.

The universities include Barishal University (BU), Comilla University (CU), Islamic University (IU), Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Jamalpur Science and Technology University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) and Rangamati Science and Technology University.

According to the notifications, the newly appointed VCs will serve a four-year term or until they reach the age of retirement, whichever comes earlier. They will receive salaries and benefits equivalent to their previous positions, along with other facilities as per university rules. As chief executive officers of their respective institutions, they are required to remain full-time on campus.

Among the appointees, BUET's new VC is Prof Dr Ekramul Haque of the Civil Engineering Department, while Islamic University appointed Prof Dr A K M Matinur Rahman of Public Administration. Comilla University's new VC is Prof Dr M M Shariful Karim of the English Department and Rangamati University has appointed Prof Dr Zainul Abedin Siddique of the Chemistry Department at Chittagong University.
