Iran’s Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council Ali Bagheri has said Russia is acting as a guarantor of security through its position and actions at the United Nations regarding the Middle East crisis.
He made the remarks on Thursday after a meeting with Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Alexander Venediktov on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting of security council secretaries.
Bagheri is leading the Iranian delegation at the SCO conference.
According to Bagheri, recent actions by the United States on the international stage have demonstrated Washington’s intention to turn the world into “a jungle where there is no place for the rule of law.”
He said Russia’s firm stance against what he described as US and Israeli aggression showed that Moscow would not allow the world to descend into lawlessness and would continue to uphold international law.
Bagheri also said Russia’s use of veto power at the UN Security Council against what he termed a destabilising US draft resolution proved Moscow was acting as a “security guarantor.”
“We believe the essence of Russia’s strategic approach is to prevent the United States from using the UN Security Council to legitimise its aggressive actions,” he said.
He added that Russia would adopt “intelligent countermeasures” against any similar US initiatives at the Security Council in the future.
Bagheri further said Iran appreciated Russia’s strong bilateral and international support during what he called aggression by the United States and Israel.
He alleged that the US and Israel posed threats not only to Iran’s national security and sovereignty, but also to international law and regional and global stability.
