The government has abolished the Supreme Court Secretariat and attached its senior secretary along with 14 other officials to the Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The decision was taken in consultation with the Supreme Court, according to a gazette notification issued by the Law and Justice Division on Tuesday (May 19) by order of the president.

The notification stated that members of the Bangladesh Judicial Service serving at the now-defunct Supreme Court Secretariat have been attached to the Law and Justice Division until further posting orders are issued.

It also included a list of the officials, their former positions at the secretariat and their newly assigned posts.

Although the notification was issued on 19 May, it was made effective retrospectively from 10 April.

In a separate office order, the ministry said the joining letters submitted by the officials were accepted with retrospective effect from 10 April.

Another order also mentioned 10 April as the officials’ joining date at the ministry. The day before, on 9 April, parliament repealed the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance.

The Supreme Court Secretariat was inaugurated on 11 December 2025 by then Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed at Supreme Court Administrative Building-4.

Law Adviser to the interim government Dr Asif Nazrul was also present at the inauguration ceremony.
