WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new username feature that will allow users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers.
The upcoming feature will enable users to create unique usernames, similar to handles used on platforms like Telegram and Instagram. When users communicate through usernames, only the selected handle will appear instead of their personal phone number.
The feature will remain optional, meaning users can continue using WhatsApp as usual if they prefer not to create a username.
According to the update, each WhatsApp account will be able to use one username at a time. Users will also have the option to change their usernames later without affecting existing chats or account settings.
Phone numbers, however, will still be connected to accounts for login and recovery purposes, though they will remain hidden during username-based interactions.
To set up a username, users will need to open WhatsApp on their Android or iPhone devices, navigate to the Settings menu and access their profile details.
Once the Username option becomes available, users can choose a unique handle and save it after WhatsApp verifies its availability.
The platform has introduced several rules for usernames. They must contain between 3 and 35 characters, include at least one letter and may only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
Usernames also cannot begin with “www,” start or end with a period, contain consecutive periods or end with domain extensions such as .com or .org.
The feature is expected to benefit users who frequently communicate with unfamiliar contacts, including online buyers and sellers, community members and professional connections, by offering an added layer of privacy.
WhatsApp has reportedly started rolling out the feature to selected Android and iOS users.
Once fully available, users will be able to choose whether others can find them through their phone number, username or both.
