Three people were killed in a landmine explosion near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Ghumdhum union of Bandarban's Naikhongchhari upazila on Sunday.

Police said that the explosion occurred in the Palashchhara area, about 200 yards inside Bangladesh territory from the zero line between border pillars 41 and 42 at Baishfari in Ghumdhum union.

The deceased were identified as Ongkyamong Tanchangya, 40, Chingkhyang Tanchangya, 32, and Chopoching Tanchangya alias Leraiya, 35. All were residents of Bhalukiyapara village under Ward No. 9 of Ghumdhum union in Naikhongchhari.

According to police and local residents, the three men went to work at a banana plantation near pillar 42 in the Tumbru no-man's-land area on Sunday afternoon. During their work, a buried landmine exploded, killing Ongkyamong Tanchangya on the spot. The other two were later killed in subsequent explosions while attempting to rescue him.
