LOS ANGELES, June 15: Iran will make its World Cup debut on Monday against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles after a turbulent build-up overshadowed by conflict in the Middle East and diplomatic tensions with the United States.
The Iranian team arrived in California on Sunday after changing its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, due to visa complications and political concerns. Several members of Iran's delegation were reportedly denied US visas.
Demonstrations by anti-government members of the Iranian diaspora are expected outside the stadium, adding further attention to the Group G encounter.
Speaking ahead of the match, Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei emphasized that his team remains focused on football despite the surrounding controversies. He said the squad hopes to represent all Iranians, both at home and abroad, and bring people together through sport.
"We are here to play good football and do not pay attention to the hype around us," Ghalenoei said, stressing that football should remain separate from politics.
Iran's opening match comes shortly after Washington and Tehran announced a permanent agreement to end their ongoing conflict.
Elsewhere on Monday, European champions Spain begin their Group H campaign against World Cup debutants Cape Verde in Atlanta. Spain are among the tournament favorites, and coach Luis de la Fuente confidently described his squad as the strongest in the competition.
Cape Verde coach Bubista welcomed the opportunity to face Spain, calling the occasion a dream and a chance to showcase his country on the world stage.
Other fixtures on Monday include Saudi Arabia versus Uruguay in Miami and Belgium against Egypt, led by Mohamed Salah, in Seattle.
In Sunday's matches, Germany thrashed Curacao 7-1 in Group E, while Japan fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Group F. Ivory Coast edged Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a late winner from Amad Diallo. Sweden also made an impressive start, defeating Tunisia 5-1, with Yasin Ayari scoring twice and goals from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, and Mattias Svanberg completing the rout. "AFP
