A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the imprisonment of television actor Mohammad Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, also known as Zaher Alvi in media, after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over his wife’s suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after Alvi surrendered before his court and sought bail through his lawyers.

Alvi arrived at the court premises around 1:30pm and stood in the dock when the hearing began at 1:56 pm. He was represented by Dhaka Bar Association President Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan and several other defence lawyers.

The complainant’s counsel opposed the bail plea, arguing that the allegations were serious and requesting that the accused be sent to jail.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered Alvi to be sent to prison.

According to the prosecution, Ikra was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the couple’s apartment in Mirpur, Dhaka, at around 11:45am on March 1, 2026. Family members, along with the house owner, rescued her and rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police later visited the hospital, prepared an inquest report, and collected evidence from the couple’s residence as part of the investigation.

On the same night, Ikra’s maternal uncle, Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed, filed a case accusing Zaher Alvi and his mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, of abetting Ikra’s suicide.
