Four inter-district bus terminals will be relocated from the capital within the next two and a half years, said Road Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Thursday.
Speaking at a programme at the Secretariat Media Centre, the minister said the terminals-- Gabtoli, Mohakhali, Sayedabad and Fulbaria-- to be relocated.
He said the existing terminals have effectively turned into workshops, with buses occupying the facilities throughout the day.
''We have observed that buses remain parked at these terminals all day. The terminals have become workshops. A bus may spend eight to ten days there for painting, dent repairs, engine overhauls and other maintenance work. This can no longer continue.''
The government has taken plans to establish dedicated depots.
Rabiul Alam added, ''One depot will be built on the 300 Feet Road, and another is being developed at Kanchpur. The facility at Kanchpur will eventually function as a terminal. As a result, Sayedabad Terminal will gradually be shifted to Kanchpur. Fulbaria Terminal will be relocated to Keraniganj, directly opposite the jail, while Gabtoli Terminal will be moved to Hemayetpur.''
