Joane faces 3-match ban in World Cup

South Africa midfielder Themba Joane has been suspended for three matches at the World Cup after receiving a red card in the team’s opening match against Mexico, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed.

Joane was sent off in the 84th minute of the match after striking Mexican defender Roberto Alvarado in the face. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio showed him a straight red card without hesitation.

The 36-year-old midfielder had come on as a substitute and committed the offence just 20 minutes after entering the field. South Africa eventually finished the match with nine players and suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mexico.

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos expressed some dissatisfaction over Joane’s suspension, saying the second red card could be debated.

“The Mexican player blocked our player, but we have to respect the referee’s decision. In my opinion, a direct red card could have been avoided in that situation,” Broos said.

However, the Belgian coach accepted Sithole’s red card decision, saying the Mexican player was moving alone towards goal and the foul prevented a clear scoring opportunity.

FIFA said the South African Football Federation will have the opportunity to appeal against the three-match suspension.
