In a major step towards reducing traffic jams and modernising urban traffic management, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced a plan to expand its artificial intelligence (AI)-based traffic signal and surveillance system across the capital.

Following successful pilot operations at several major intersections, in the first phase the DMP decided to bring 120 important intersections under the AI-powered system. The AL-powered project  will be implemented jointly by DMP and DSCC-DNCC, Dhaka's two city corporations.

The plan was disclosed at a meeting on 'traffic congestion reduction and traffic management modernisation' held at the Secretariat on Monday, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Officials said the project aims to automate traffic control on major roads and improve overall traffic flow through advanced technology.

According to meeting sources, no additional government allocation or special funding will be required for the project. The DMP is expected to implement the initiative using its own resources, while the city corporations will continue supporting infrastructure development.

The AI-based traffic system was initially introduced on a trial basis at key locations, including Jahangir Gate, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Banglamotor, and the intersection near Hotel InterContinental. The traffic signals were developed locally by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and can operate both automatically and manually when necessary.
