Metro rail services were suspended for about 20 minutes on Sunday morning after gas balloons became entangled in an overhead power line near Dhaka University Station.
The incident occurred at around 6:45AM near the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Metro rail sources said a large number of Argentina football supporters had gathered at TSC following Argentina's match. During the celebrations, a cluster of blue-and-white gas balloons drifted onto the metro rail's overhead catenary system.
The system's automatic safety mechanism cut off the power supply, forcing a train travelling from Uttara to Motijheel to stop near Dhaka University Station and temporarily suspending services across the entire line.
Officials of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) said the balloons were removed from the overhead wire within 15 to 20 minutes, after which the area was declared safe and metro rail services resumed.
