The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested eight suspected muggers, including Shamim Patali, the second-in-command of the notorious Patali Group, during a series of raids in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
During the operations, RAB recovered one foreign-made pistol, one magazine, two rounds of live ammunition, two Chinese-made axes, two machetes and one sword.
Confirming the arrests, RAB-2 Commanding Officer Additional Deputy Inspector General Noymul Hasan said that all of the detainees have multiple criminal cases in different police station.
Speaking at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Sunday, he further said that intelligence surveillance and data analysis led to the special operation targeting a criminal network involved in organised mugging, teen-gangs, extortion, drug trafficking, theft and other terrorist activities in the Adabor-Mohammadpur area.
Acting on a tip-off, RAB came to know that members of the Patali Group were preparing to carry out robberies in the Bosila area under Mohammadpur Police Station, RAB first arrested Khokon Munshi and Sajib Bepari, associates of the gang’s top leadership.
Based on information obtained during their interrogation, another RAB team later that night arrested Shamim Patali, one of the group’s top leaders, from Chandrima Model Town. A foreign-made firearm and two rounds of live ammunition were seized from his possession, Noymul Hasan said.
