Couple, infant killed in Gazipur road accident

A couple and their nine-month-old child were killed after being hit by a covered van while crossing a road in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Saturday.

The accident occurred around noon on the Dhaka�"Mymensingh Highway in the No-2 C&B area of Beraiderchala village, said Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Maona Highway Police Station.

The deceased were identified as Rakib Hasan, 35, son of Sekandar Ali Bepari of Uttar Ranipur village in Pirojpur Sadar upazila, his wife Bithi Akter, 30, and their nine-month-old son, Nur.

Rakib Hasan worked in the human resources department of Denimac Garments Ltd., located in the Gargaria Master Bari area of Sreepur municipality.

According to the OC, the couple was crossing the Dhaka�"Mymensingh Highway with their infant in their arms in the Beraiderchala area when an unidentified covered van travelling towards Mymensingh struck them. Bithi Akter died on the spot.

Rakib Hasan was rescued in critical condition and taken to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Their nine-month-old son was also critically injured in the accident. He died while being taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment, the police officer said.
