Notice sent to halt Bangladeshi travel to West Bengal, Tripura
Legal notice has been issued regarding a temporary suspension of immigration activities of Bangladeshi citizens in West Bengal and Tripura until their safety is ensured.
On Monday (July 13), Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Md. Mahmudul Hasan Mamun sent this legal notice in the public interest.
The notice was sent to the Cabinet Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director General of the Department of Immigration and Passports, and Chairman of the Bangladesh Land Port Authority.
The legal notice stated, every year huge numbers of Bangladeshi citizens travel india for various purposes. However, according to the information recently published in media and social networks, Some Bengali-speaking extremist groups of India are threatening Bangladeshi citizens.
Those threats said, if any Bangladeshi enters West Bengal or Tripura, they are to face harassment, torture or violence. This could pose a serious risk to Bangladeshi citizens travelling those regions of India.
There have been allegations against Indian extremist groups for attacking and vandalizing Bangladeshi diplomatic mission in India. In context of such incidents, the notice stated safety of Bangladeshi citizens is a constitutional responsibility of the state.
The legal notice urged the relevant authorities to take necessary administrative measures within the next seven days and inform the notice sender.
The notice also stated that if necessary steps are not taken within the specified time, a writ petition will be filed in the public interest under Article 102 of the Constitution of Bangladesh in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court for the sake of citizens' lives and security.
