The new king is Mbappé!
France forward Kylian Mbappé has etched his name into football history by becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history. The 27-year-old reached the milestone after scoring twice against England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff, taking his World Cup tally to 22 goals and surpassing Lionel Messi's previous record of 21. Reuters confirmed the achievement following the match.
Although France suffered a 6-4 defeat to England, Mbappé's historic feat overshadowed the result. He netted his first goal in the 47th minute to draw level with Messi before scoring again in the 66th minute to claim sole ownership of the all-time World Cup scoring record.
Mbappé's rise to the top has been remarkably swift. He announced himself on the global stage with four goals as France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He followed that with eight goals at the 2022 tournament in Qatar and added 10 more during the 2026 World Cup, bringing his overall total to 22 goals in just 22 World Cup appearances.
The updated all-time World Cup goalscoring chart now places Mbappé first with 22 goals, followed by Argentina's Lionel Messi with 21. Germany's Miroslav Klose is third with 16 goals, Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário has 15, while Germany's Gerd Müller rounds out the top five with 14.
Despite reaching a landmark that many consider one of football's greatest individual achievements, Mbappé said the team's success remains his priority. He expressed disappointment at France's failure to reach the World Cup final, noting that winning the trophy matters more to him than personal records. Nevertheless, his achievement has secured his place among the greatest players in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
