Islamist parties' unity signals political realignment

A Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh-led initiative to unite seven registered Qawmi-based Islamist political parties under a common platform has fuelled speculation over a possible realignment of the country's Islamist politics, with leaders agreeing in principle to pursue a united front while maintaining their individual identities.

The move was initiated by Hefazat-e-Islam at the invitation of its Ameer, Allama Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari, during a meeting held on Thursday at Jamia Islamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari, Chattogram. Leaders attending the meeting reached a consensus in principle to work together under a common platform, with the next phase focusing on preparing a framework for the proposed alliance.

Under the proposed process, the participating parties have been asked to submit their recommendations on the alliance's structure, objectives and organisational framework by August 3. A seven-member committee, headed by Hefazat Secretary General Allama Sajidur Rahman, will review the proposals before another round of discussions is held to determine the alliance's future course.

The initiative comes after Qawmi-oriented Islamist parties found themselves split ahead of the 13th parliamentary election, with different groups aligning separately with the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami-led political alliances. Political observers believe a successful reunification could significantly reshape the country's Islamist political landscape and raise questions over the future of existing coalitions, particularly the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.

Speaking to The Daily Observer, Hefazat Joint Secretary General Maulana Azizul Haque Islamabadi said discussions remain at a preliminary stage.

"We have only held initial discussions. A detailed framework will be prepared before any formal decision is taken. Similar efforts were made before the election but could not materialise because the parties were aligned with different coalitions. This time, there is a shared understanding to build a united platform while preserving each party's identity," he said.

He added that the issue of remaining in or leaving existing political alliances had not yet been discussed.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed said the meeting primarily aimed to narrow divisions among Qawmi-based parties and strengthen cooperation.

"The meeting focused on bringing the parties closer together. We agreed in principle to continue discussions on working collectively, but no decision was taken regarding the 11-party alliance," he said.

However, sources familiar with the discussions said participating parties could eventually find it difficult to remain in separate political coalitions if the proposed alliance takes shape, although no formal decision has yet been made.

The meeting was attended by leaders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Khelafat Majlish, Khelafat Andolan, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Islami Oikya Jote and Nezame Islam Party, alongside Hefazat's senior leadership.

Political analysts said the initiative reflects a growing effort to consolidate the Qawmi-based Islamist political stream under a single umbrella. However, they noted that the success of the proposed alliance would ultimately depend on whether the parties can overcome differences over leadership, electoral strategy and long-term political objectives, which have historically hindered similar attempts at unity.
