Police have arrested a convict in an arms case who had been absconding for 16 years from Khulna's Khalishpur area with the assistance of RAB-6.
The arrested man is Md Arif Hossain, 44, son of the late Abdul Hai Akon of Bhuterdia village under Kedarpur Union in Babuganj upazila of Barishal.
According to police, Arif was convicted in an arms case filed in 2003. In 2010, the court sentenced him under Section 19-K of the Arms Act. He had remained in hiding since the verdict and was listed as a fugitive warrant accused as the arrest warrant could not be executed for years.
After the arrest warrant recently reached Babuganj Police Station, Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman Hawlader directed police to arrest the convict.
Following the instruction, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Even Mahadi traced Arif's whereabouts through information technology, intelligence gathering and continuous investigation.
Police later confirmed that the convict had been hiding in the Khalishpur area of Khulna for a long time. Based on the information, a team led by ASI Even Mahadi, with support from RAB-6, arrested him on the night of July 18.
He was brought to Babuganj Police Station and later produced before the court after completion of the legal formalities.
OC Mizanur Rahman Hawlader said drives to arrest long-absconding warrant accused would continue.
"Through information technology, intelligence surveillance and inter-district coordination, we will bring them under the law wherever they are hiding," he said.
