Nasirul elected NPC President, Dr Maruf Secretary General

Senior Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Nasirul Islam has been elected President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Bangladesh, while Dr Maruf Ahmed Mridul was elected Secretary General in the committee's election held on Thursday.

Polling took place from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the conference room of the National Stadium, with 19 of the 21 eligible voters exercising their franchise.

Former Bangladesh cricketer Sanwar Hossain was elected Vice-President, Hedayetul Aziz became Deputy Secretary General (Joint Secretary), and Asiful Hasan Masud was chosen as Treasurer.

The newly elected executive committee also includes members Dr Muhammad Sohrab Hossain, Md Anwar Kabir Chowdhury, Md Saif Uddin, Mir Enayet Hossain, Md Hasanuzzaman Jharu, Md Mostak Sarker, Major Kaniz Fatema, Farida Akter Asma and Md Shahidullah, who represents the Para Athletes' Commission.

The election ushers in a new administration at a time when Bangladesh is seeking to broaden the footprint of para sports and strengthen its presence on the international stage.

NPC Bangladesh is the country's governing body for para sports and a recognised member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). It is responsible for identifying and nurturing athletes with disabilities, organising national competitions and preparing teams for major international events, including the Paralympic Games and the Asian Para Games.
