BUET appoints Prof Mohammad Shariful Islam as Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Professor Dr Mohammad Shariful Islam of the Department of Civil Engineering has assumed office as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

According to a Ministry of Education notification issued on July 22, Prof Shariful Islam has been appointed to the post for a four-year term. He officially took charge on Saturday, succeeding Prof Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury as the university's fourth Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

A BUET alumnus, Prof Shariful Islam graduated with distinction in Civil Engineering in 1997 and joined the university as a lecturer in the same year. He was promoted to professor in 2013.

He currently serves as Director of the Research and Innovation Center for Science and Engineering (RISE) at BUET. He earned his PhD from Saitama University, Japan, in 2002 and later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the same institution.

Born in Cumilla, Prof Shariful Islam ranked 12th in the combined merit list in the SSC examination from Government Laboratory High School, Cumilla, in 1988, and secured second place in the combined merit list in the HSC examination from Cumilla Victoria Government College in 1990.

Over his academic career, he has published numerous research papers, technical publications and engineering design materials in national and international journals, conference proceedings and books. He has also received 29 national and international awards in recognition of his research and academic contributions.

His vetiver-based bioengineering technology has been applied in infrastructure development and environmental conservation projects in Bangladesh as well as several other countries, including Cambodia and Indonesia, according to the press release.

BUET expressed hope that under Prof Shariful Islam's leadership, the university would further strengthen its achievements in education, research and innovation.
