Rumours of selling Nagad are baseless, says ICT minister

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Posts and Telecommunications, and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam on Wednesday dismissed rumours about the sale of the state-owned mobile financial service Nagad as "baseless," urging people not to be misled by misinformation. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to retaining Nagad under state management while strengthening its competitiveness and public service.
The minister made the remarks while inaugurating franchise post offices and receiving a profit-sharing cheque of Tk 185.7 million from Nagad for the 2025-26 fiscal year at the General Post Office (GPO) building in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Addressing the event as the chief guest, Anam said the government is working to make the postal service more accessible and efficient through the introduction of franchise post offices, a model that has already proven successful in many countries. He expressed optimism that the initiative would gradually be expanded nationwide, creating new employment and business opportunities while improving public access to postal and digital financial services.
Rejecting speculation over Nagad's future ownership, the minister said the government has no plans to sell the mobile financial service. Instead, he said, the goal is to transform state-owned institutions such as Nagad into more efficient, profitable and people-oriented organizations.
He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has made significant progress in implementing its election pledges within six months of taking office, adding that Nagad's profitability is one example of those achievements.
The minister noted that digital financial services are playing an increasingly important role in delivering secure, affordable and convenient services to people across the country. He stressed the need to enhance Nagad's technological capabilities, ensure transparency and accountability, and improve customer service to further strengthen public confidence.
Anam also said Nagad has contributed significantly to the national exchequer through taxes and revenue during the current fiscal year, describing it as a positive achievement for the state.
Under the first phase of the franchise initiative, four franchise post offices in Dhaka and four outside the capital have been launched, with plans to gradually expand the model across the country.
The event was chaired by Md. Motasim Billah, Administrator of Bangladesh Post Office (BPO)-Nagad. Director General (Acting) of the Department of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam and Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi attended as special guests, alongside senior Nagad officials, postal department officials and other stakeholders.
