11-Party alliance condemns police harassment

The 11-Party Alliance on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged police harassment of the opposition chief whip and senior leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Habiganj, as well as the reported attack on the party's motorcade, describing the incidents as an assault on democratic rights.
In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the alliance's coordinator, Dr. AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, denounced what he described as police obstruction and harassment of Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam, along with other senior party leaders, while they were travelling from Moulvibazar to Habiganj.
According to the statement, an attack was carried out on the motorcade of NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam in Habiganj on July 28 after the party's "July March-2026" programme. It further alleged that on July 29, authorities imposed Section 144 in parts of Habiganj, including Sreemangal, and police prevented Nahid Islam and other NCP leaders from reaching a scheduled political programme.
The alliance claimed that preventing opposition leaders from attending a peaceful political event amounted to a violation of democratic rights. It demanded that those responsible for the attack be identified and brought to justice without delay.
In the statement, Dr. Azad said the July uprising had restored freedom of expression and political rights, adding that violence in response to political speech has no place in a democratic society. He alleged that the government had failed to politically confront the opposition and instead allowed attacks on opposition activists.
The alliance also called for the arrest and prosecution of those allegedly involved in the attack on NCP leaders in Habiganj, claiming that some BNP activists had taken the law into their own hands.
Expressing concern over the imposition of Section 144, Dr. Azad said restricting opposition political activities undermines citizens' democratic rights. He urged the government not to obstruct peaceful opposition programmes in the future and called on law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties impartially while respecting citizens' fundamental rights.
No immediate response from the government, police, or BNP regarding the allegations was available at the time of filing this report.
