Bangladesh finish runners-up as Pakistan retain title

 
Bangladesh's dream of lifting their maiden CAVA Men's Volleyball Championship title fell at the final hurdle as hosts Pakistan claimed a commanding 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-20) victory in the final in Islamabad on Wednesday. Despite the defeat, Bangladesh returned home with the silver medal, the country's best-ever finish in the history of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Men's Championship.

Playing before a passionate home crowd, Pakistan stamped their authority on the contest from the opening whistle. Bangladesh, coached by Haroshit Biswas, fought hard but were unable to match the hosts' power and consistency as Pakistan completed a straight-sets triumph to successfully defend the title. 

The opening set was closely contested, with Bangladesh staying within touching distance before Pakistan pulled away to seal it 25-20. The hosts tightened their grip on the match in the second set, dominating both in attack and defence to race to a convincing 25-16 victory. Facing elimination, Bangladesh mounted a spirited resistance in the third set and kept the scoreboard ticking, but Pakistan once again held their nerve to close out the set 25-20 and secure the championship.

Although the gold medal slipped through their fingers, Bangladesh can take immense pride from a memorable campaign. Entering the semi-finals after finishing third in the six-team round-robin standings, the men in red and green produced one of their finest performances of the tournament by sweeping aside second-placed Uzbekistan 3-0 to earn a place in the final.

Bangladesh's overall record reflected their growing stature in regional volleyball. They won five of their seven matches, defeating Uzbekistan twice, Nepal, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka, while their only defeats came against eventual champions Pakistan in the league stage and the final.

The eight-day championship, organised by the Pakistan Volleyball Federation under the auspices of the Central Asian Volleyball Association, featured six nations, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. 

The runners-up finish marked a significant step forward for Bangladesh, who had finished fourth in the previous edition in 2025 after losing to Afghanistan in the semi-finals and then to Sri Lanka in the third-place play-off. This time, they went one better, breaking new ground by reaching the final and returning with the country's first-ever CAVA Men's Championship silver medal, an achievement that signals the steady rise of Bangladesh volleyball on the regional stage.
