Illegal shops affect visitors at Ramgati tourist spot

RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR, Aug 1: Illegal roadside shops have become a major source of inconvenience for visitors at Alexander Meghna Beach, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Laxmipur's Ramgati Upazila.

Stalls erected on the paved embankment along the Meghna River are obstructing pedestrian movement and raising safety concerns, while poor waste management is damaging the area's natural environment.

A visit to the site found that a number of makeshift shops and tables had been set up illegally by local traders on the embankment, leaving little space for visitors to walk. Numerous stalls selling snacks, tea and toys have sprung up along the sloping riverbank.

Although the government has strict directives against illegal structures in riverbank and coastal areas, the shops remain in place.

Because of the congestion, visitors are often forced to walk along the concrete blocks lining the river, increasing the risk of falling into the Meghna, particularly for children.

The absence of adequate waste bins has further compounded the problem, with many vendors dumping garbage directly into the river or nearby areas, polluting the environment and diminishing the scenic beauty of the tourist spot.

Visitor Abul Kalam said, "Shops have occupied the walking space. We are worried about the safety of our children. If they slip from the concrete blocks, they could fall straight into the Meghna."

Another visitor, Arif, said the shops had blocked public walkways and spoiled the appearance of the tourist destination.

"The authorities should remove these illegal shops immediately," he said.

Shopkeepers Alauddin and Jewel alleged that a local syndicate had facilitated the establishment of the shops.

Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nilufa Yasmin Nipa said no obstruction that hampers visitors' movement would be allowed along the riverbank.
