From repeated constraints to a repeatable system: The early methodology behind Jarin's Design Practice

Every multi-location business runs on repetition, yet every building is different. A growing company can replicate its staffing, systems, and service standards across dozens of locations, but each building presents different frontage, circulation, access, storage, and spatial constraints. Operational requirements remain constant while physical conditions vary from site to site. For most design teams, that means redesigning every location from scratch, making expansion slower and more expensive.

To address this challenge, Jarin Tasnim Khan developed a constraint-driven spatial deployment framework that transformed recurring operational requirements into a repeatable planning system. Instead of standardizing a prototype floor plan, the framework standardized the operational logic behind it, allowing the same business model to be systematically adapted across buildings with different physical conditions.

Khan first developed the framework while working on the rollout of neighborhood service centers for one of the world's largest express courier companies. The leased commercial units, located across Dhaka and Chittagong, differed significantly in size, layout, circulation, storage, and customer access, yet each location needed to support the same operational requirements. Rather than treating each branch as a new design exercise, Khan identified the operational principles that remained constant across buildings and translated them into a repeatable set of spatial rules. Instead of replicating a floor plan, the framework replicated the planning logic, allowing each location to respond to its own physical constraints while maintaining consistent operations across the network.

The results were significant. Over approximately ten months, the methodology supported the rollout of more than fifteen neighborhood service centers despite substantial differences in their layouts and physical constraints. The rollout demonstrated that a single planning methodology could be systematically applied across multiple locations while maintaining operational consistency.

The methodology's broader value became even clearer when Khan applied it to an entirely different sector. A hospitality startup operating under one of the region's largest business conglomerates sought to expand across multiple cities by converting existing residential apartments into guest accommodations. Each apartment presented a different layout and set of physical constraints, yet every property needed to deliver a consistent hospitality experience without structural modifications or changes to shared circulation. Khan adapted the framework into a plug-in conversion model that integrated hospitality operations within existing residential buildings while preserving their structural systems and shared circulation. From unit selection to operational launch, deployment averaged approximately six weeks. The completed properties were listed on major international booking platforms, where guest ratings generally ranged between 8.7 and 9.0, demonstrating that rapid deployment could be achieved without compromising operational quality.

More broadly, the work demonstrated that standardized operations do not require standardized buildings. By separating operational logic from physical form, the methodology provides organizations with a systematic way to adapt diverse existing facilities while maintaining consistent operations across multiple locations. The broader principles behind this work have continued to shape professional conversations through presentations at major architecture and sustainability conferences, underscoring the methodology's relevance beyond the projects in which it was first developed.
