Viral hero can be a zero in an instant

Several social media personalities in Bangladesh have seen their public image change rapidly after allegations or previously undisclosed information surfaced, highlighting how quickly online popularity can fade.

One recent example is content creator Ripon Mia, who is accused in a rape case involving a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Netrokona. Police said a case has been filed against him, and he has been absconding since the allegations emerged. No new posts have appeared on his verified Facebook account since July 29.

Ripon, a carpenter by profession, began creating Facebook videos in 2016 and rose to prominence through his online content. His Facebook page currently has around 1.9 million followers.

According to the victim’s family, Ripon allegedly threatened the schoolgirl and harassed her. They claimed the matter was initially kept private out of fear. A local mediation was later held, where, according to local sources, Ripon admitted the allegations, apologised, was fined Tk 500,000 and asked to leave the area before the case became public. The allegations have not yet been tested in court.

The report also recalls the 2022 case of Sohel Mia, who went viral after marrying a woman with a physical disability. Following widespread public attention, reports revealed he had a previous wife and four children in Chapainawabganj, whom he had left years earlier. He later acknowledged his first marriage, saying family disputes had led to the separation.

The case drew national attention, prompting assistance from the then Prime Minister’s Office. However, public sentiment shifted after details of his earlier family became known.

The incidents illustrate how rapidly social media fame can change when new information or allegations emerge.
