Football Association raided by South Korea police in coach appointment probe

On Thursday, South Korean police raided the state’s football association as part of an investigation into the appointment of a coach in charge of the country’s football team, when the team displayed a dismal performance at the World Cup.
A spokesperson for the South Korean Police told AFP that the force conducted a ‘search and seizure operations” at the Korea Association’s offices, looking over the allegations of “obstruction of business” involved in the hiring of former coach Hong Myung-bo.
Hong retired in June after South Korea were knocked out in an embarrassing 1-0 defeat against South Africa. He was 57 when he had to retire.
Questions over the Korean Football Association hiring has been around since Hong’s appointment in 2024. But the questions would turn to scrutiny once the team exited the group stage.
In late July, Hong said he would take “full responsibility” for the team’s poor performance at the World Cup, after being brought before a committee of lawmakers probing the issue.
According to President Lee Jae Myung, the fault lies in “incompetent people” being promoted to leadership ,where “loyalty and factionalism” tainted the recruitment process at the sport’s top.
