The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has rescued more than 200 migrants off the coast of Greece in the past 48 hours till Friday. Most of those rescued are citizens of Bangladesh and Sudan, local authorities say.

At least 202 migrants have reached the southern Greek island of Crete in less than 48 hours on journeys launched from the Libya coast, according to Greek newspaper Dimokratia.

Middle East Monitor says the rush has increased the pressure on the island's authorities and reception centres.

Greek authorities said a new boat carrying 40 migrants had arrived in the southeastern area of Ierapetra after being detected by aircraft. The coast guard, assisted by a fishing boat, transported the migrants to the port.

There, registration procedures were carried out alongside identity checks.
