Around Tk 1.21 crore belonging to a petrol pump owned by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s maternal cousin was allegedly looted after armed robbers intercepted a vehicle carrying the cash to a bank in Uttara on Sunday morning.
The incident took place around 10:30am in front of Crown Plaza on Airport Road, said Tariq Ahmed Beg, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Uttara division.
According to a case filed with Airport Police Station on Sunday night, six to seven people riding three motorcycles intercepted a covered van carrying the money to Pubali Bank in Uttara Sector 1.
The robbers allegedly held the petrol pump employees at gunpoint and hacked assistant manager Mohammad Al Amin with a machete before snatching the cash-filled bag and fleeing towards Abdullahpur.
