Mayor killed in bomb attack in Afghanistan

The mayor of Faizabad, the provincial capital of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, was killed in a bomb attack on Thursday (August 13), hospital and municipal sources confirmed to AFP. Geo News also reported the incident.
The deceased was identified as Habib-ur-Rahman Mansour, mayor of Faizabad.
According to a hospital nurse, a bomb attack targeted the vehicle carrying Mansour. He sustained critical injuries in the blast and later died. The nurse spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.
A Faizabad municipal employee also said the mayor was killed when a bomb planted near their workplace exploded.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mansour’s killing comes just three weeks after another government official was shot dead in the same province. Zabihullah Amiri, head of Badakhshan’s Information and Culture Department, was killed in a shooting while travelling to Faizabad.
The remote province of Badakhshan has emerged as an important centre for mineral extraction under Taliban rule. Mining activities have expanded in the province since the Taliban returned to power five years ago.
However, security remains a concern in the region. In May, clashes broke out between security forces and local residents during an operation to destroy opium poppy fields. Two people, including a teenager, were killed in the clashes.
The Taliban authorities have pledged to ensure security across Afghanistan, but sporadic attacks have continued in the country since they returned to power in 2021.
