An LNG station will be set up at Akram Point inside Mongla Port, while a 23-kilometre pipeline will be constructed to supply gas from the station to Mongla, said Minister for Shipping, Road Transport, Bridges and Railways Sheikh Rabiul Alam.

He said a power generation centre would also be built using gas supplied through the pipeline.

The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a reception organised by the municipal BNP at Mongla Port bus stand on Sunday afternoon.

Mongla Municipal BNP President and former mayor Md Zulfikar Ali organised the reception on his personal initiative to welcome the minister during his visit to Mongla.

Sheikh Rabiul Alam said the government was working to accelerate the country’s development and bring major changes to state management.

“We want to implement the aspirations of the people. This is the politics of BNP,” he said.

He said the government planned to implement the 10th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge over the Mongla River as soon as possible.

Work on the Mongla Special Economic Zone would begin in October, he said, adding that the project was expected to create employment opportunities for around 60,000 people in the area.
