Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, was injured in an attack allegedly over claims of wrong treatment. Police have arrested a man named Jibon in connection with the incident.
The 55-year-old physician was attacked shortly after leaving his chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar around 11:30pm on Monday. He is currently receiving treatment at Cabin No. 4 of the cabin block at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to police, Asadur Rahman had just boarded a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after leaving the diagnostic centre when several people stopped the vehicle, pulled him out and assaulted him.
Jibon was detained from the scene. During questioning, he reportedly told police that the doctor was attacked by relatives and friends of a patient over allegations that the patient had received wrong treatment about a month earlier.
Police said both the injured physician and the arrested man are from Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur. Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the alleged treatment and the motive behind the attack.
A case was filed with Paltan Police Station, following which Jibon was shown arrested in the case.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain visited the injured physician at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafa Kamal Khan said a case had been filed over the attack and one person arrested.
“The arrested person told police that the attack was carried out out of anger over alleged wrong treatment of a patient. He claimed to be a friend of the patient,” the OC said.
